Winter and Spring Excursions in Ilulissat

The location of Ilulissat is breathtaking - all year huge icebergs rising more than 100 metres above sea level are stranded in the ice fjord just south of the town. These icebergs are all products of the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere; The Ilulissat Glacier gives birth to 20 million tons of ice every day and the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Guided Tour of Ilulissat
Take a walk through town during which our guide describes the history of Ilulissat. We visit the old part of town and see the buildings from the very start of the Danish trading station, the busy fishing harbour, the old Zion church and the museum.

The Icebergs of Sermermiut
Travel by car as far as the road allows, followed by an easy hike to a viewpoint from where the magnificent icebergs at the mouth of the Ice Fjord can be seen. Spectacular!

Rodebay by Boat
Travel by boat to the small settlement of Rodebay (Oqaitsut), which is only accessible by boat or dog sled. The settlement has about 80 inhabitants who are entirely depending upon fishing and hunting - a different world compared to the nearby town of Ilulissat. Lunch at a local restaurant and time to stroll around in the village before returning to Ilulissat.
(On occasion, packed lunches may be supplied by the hotel).
Operated by boat when open water - expected to be until late November and from mid March, but may also be all winter. When the fjord is frozen the village is only accessible by dog sled: Please see full day excursion by dog sled.

Iceberg cruise
Ilulissat is world famous for its icebergs and a cruise provides the perfect opportunity to get close to these gigantic natural sculptures. A rare opportunity to explore a World Heritage Site!
Only operated when open water. Expected to be until late November and from mid March, but might also be all winter.
Duration: 2½ hours (approx.)

Greenland's Icecap by Helicopter
Subject to sufficient interest (approx. 10 people), it may be possible to arrange a helicopter tour from Ilulissat, flying low over the icebergs of the Ice Fjord and up to the magnificent Icecap where it may be possible to land. Perhaps one of the most spectacular ways to experience Greenland!
Operation depends on weather conditions and helicopter capacity, and tour may only be booked locally.
Duration: About 55 min flying time, plus 30 min ground stop

Dog Sled Adventure
To leave the civilized world and enter the Arctic wonderland of low mountain passes and ice-covered fjords where icebergs rise like sculptures is to travel back in time into the realm of the old polar explorers - the only noise is the sound of the sled moving over the ice and the shouts of encouragement your driver makes to his dogs.
The route will be in the mountains and fjords close to Ilulissat, depending on snow and ice conditions.
Only operated when sufficient snow - expected from early/mid December to late March. Rent of fur clothes and boots at surcharge.
Please note that you should be in reasonable physical shape to join a dog sled tour

The outside temperature might drop to minus 25 degrees Celsius - a cold but invigorating experience! Luckily genuine Greenlandic seal skin Anorak and trousers as well as polar boots are available for hire.

Winter and Spring Excursions in Kangerlussuaq

Kangerlussuaq is one of the best places in the world to experience the Northern Lights during the winter.

The excursions on offer in Kangerlussuaq provide a taste of this remarkable Arctic wilderness, with unique access to the famous Greenland Icecap. Furthermore this is a great area for wildlife with huge populations of Reindeer and Musk Oxen as well as Arctic Foxes and Arctic Hares.

Kangerlussuaq Information Tour
Orientation tour of Kangerlussuaq to learn about the history of the airport and to show the locations of the various facilities.

The Inland Icecap
Drive along a mountain track and partly off-road directly to the Greenland's magnificent Inland Icecap, passing through an impressive Arctic landscape of former glacial valleys, along frozen rivers and over small passes - and stop right up close to this 3 million cubic kilometer lump of ice.
Duration: 4 - 5 hours

Arctic Nature Tour
The world's biggest population of wild Musk Oxen live close to Kangerlussuaq. We drive to an area where the animals are regularly seen and are often able to get quite close for good photo opportunities. Reindeer, Arctic Foxes and Arctic Hares can be seen too. Please note that this is a wilderness area where animals are free to roam therefore, although they are common, sightings cannot be guaranteed. The tour also includes a visit to a Musk Ox exhibition.

Dog Sled Experience
This 2 hour tour allows you, together with your Greenlandic sled driver and his pack of Greenlandic huskies, to experience of the Inuit's most traditional form of transport. A fabulous way to explore the area.
Only operated when sufficient snow - expected from early/mid December to late March.
Hire of sealskin anorak and trousers and boots is included in all dog sled tours in Kangerlussuaq.

Northern Lights Evening Tour
Kangerlussuaq is one of the best locations in the world to experience the Aurora Borealis. We drive by car to a cosy cabin at Lake Ferguson where the guide tells Greenlandic Sagas and serves refreshments while we hope to experience nature's incredible show when the fantastic Northern Lights flash and dance across the night sky.
Only operated in the Northern Light season from end of November to end of March, and note that tours may be cancelled if conditions are cloudy. Refunds will be available for pre-booked tours.
